I know this is in no particular order but as a girlie doing a degree in Fashion Marketing, what should be my first read?

I think Deluxe is a strong one to start with, it gives a great yet more general overview of the industry as a whole!

I’d also suggest “The Luxury Strategy” or “On Luxury” both by Jean-Noël Kapferer. Even though some of the info are outdated now, his book has been fundamental to better understand the business of fashion and luxury (fashion copywriter here!) x

Much appreciated, thank you ♡

Great reading list. Leon Talley’s Chiffon Trenches is next up on my books to read and can’t wait for it.

I second this! I loved reading about his rise within the industry especially his time in Paris.

Thank you, looking forward to diving into these recommendations!

I recommend Edward Enninful's biography too. It puts such an emphasis on his work and why he creates the way he does—also, it's such a tear-jerker.

And Diana Vreeland's biography (the one she authored, not the other) purely for whimsy and joy lol

I’m a medical student but I loveee seeing, watching and reading things about fashion. I also dream of having a career in fashion😅. Can’t wait to get into these🤭

This list is gold ✨ Looking forward to read Dressed!

I never learned fashion either. For me, art became my “fashion school.” Paintings taught me how to pair colors, play with patterns, and even treat accessories like punctuation marks. Turner for colour, Kusama for patterns, Vermeer for accessories.

Just wrote about it in my autumn wardrobe guide if anyone’s curious: https://elenamostovova.substack.com/p/the-ultimate-guide-to-your-autumn

LOVED The Chiffon Trenches. It's definitely a book you have to read between the lines and with a grain of salt since it's penned by Andre and there's always implicit bias, but I thought he did a great job of being fair and equitable.

I also STRONGLY recommend Anna's biography by Amy Odell—another great one to read between the lines about the industry.

how should i put this?'s avatar

I need this list and adding it all to my list + must say… just working in a high end retailer teaches you so much… about where products are made… what materials last… what colors go together when you see it paired over and over walking through the floor… talking to your visual merchandiser !!! 💕

I’ve been craving to find a post like this. Thank you for sharing. I just finished Empresses of Seventh Avenue by Nancy Macdonell and it was not only extremely educational but also very insightful. It talks about how American fashion was established after the war and the woman who were crucial in making it the powerhouse that it became, that are often overseen or not mentioned. Would love to know your take on it.
